Albert Micajah Shipp (1819-1887), son of Elizabeth Oglesby and John Shipp, was born in Stokes County, NC. He entered the University in 1836, became a member of the Dialectic Society, and graduated with first honors in 1840. That same year he was licensed to preach by the Methodist Episcopal Church. He served pastorates in South and North Carolina until 1848, when a throat infection weakened his voice. Shipp became president of Greensboro Female College for one year, then joined the University faculty in 1849. He resigned his professorship in July 1859 to become president of Wofford College. Subsequently he also was a faculty member, dean, and vice-chancellor at Vanderbilt University. He received the MA from the University in 1845 and a DD from Randolph-Macon College. Shipp married Mary Gillespie of South Carolina, "and they reared a large family" (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 5:334).
